Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange– what’s that?

Don’t worry; it’s a question we are used to hearing. Most people have heard of LASIK, but they haven’t heard of this incredible new procedure that corrects both near and distance vision for the rest of your life and can be an option even for people who aren’t good LASIK candidates.

Also known as Lens Replacement Surgery, RLE corrects presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) and moderate to severe hyperopia (farsightedness due to factors other than normal aging) as well as myopia (nearsightedness).

Although RLE has only been around for a few years, that shouldn’t scare you. Just like a car getting a new engine, while the hardware may be new and better, the procedure the mechanic uses to install it isn’t. RLE uses the same extremely safe and well-tested procedure used for cataract surgery– basically replacing the eye’s faulty lens with an artificial one.

About 25 million cataract surgeries have been done in the United States in the past 10 years, and the procedure has been proven both safe and effective. Now, with RLE, we can improve your vision before you ever develop a cataract. And you will never develop a cataract, because the milky-white obstruction that robs so many people of their vision is a breakdown of the natural lens. That doesn’t happen with an artificial one.

Now we have you thinking…Science Fiction, however RLE is an amazing, revolutionary breakthrough in the field of vision correction. But, remember, we’re not flying to Jupiter here. We’re just getting a better look at the moon.

Your RLE consultation

To determine if you are an RLE candidate, we will use a variety of non-invasive diagnostic tests and imaging technologies to measure your prescription, your vision, and the unique biology of your eye. These results coupled with your medical history and the expert opinion of your eye surgeon will help determine the best course for you. If you and the doctor agree to move forward, we’ll book your surgery for a convenient future date.

What to expect

Again, it sounds too good to be true, but RLE vision correction is quick and painless. You will be asked to lie on your back and look at a light. It’s okay if you blink (everyone does). It’s okay if your eye moves (everyone’s does). The entire procedure takes roughly 10 minutes, then you are sent home with prescription eye drops that you’ll use for a few weeks afterward.

Many patients have dramatically improved vision the same day. The rest notice the drastic change the day after surgery. By this point, can be reading a newspaper– without glasses or contacts. And the next day– well, that’s up to you!

Of course, we are always available to respond to any questions or concerns you may have….we do this every day, but we realize that you don’t. We want you to feel as confident as we do with your RLE procedure, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.
